There are more than 16000 species of ants, but not all reaches inside your home. Very few are known to be of home invaders! What types of ants poses threat to your homes actually depends on various factors like appearance, habitat and the region where you live. the easier way of identifying the species of any ant is to look at their one or two nodes, or "humps" on their thorax. Crematogaster or Acrobat Ants

Acrobat Ants ants are aggressive and will sting. When these ants run they held their abdomen in air and this gives an impression as if they are tumbling, hence the name , "acrobat ant." They are yellow-brown to brown and red-black to all black in color. Acrobat Ants will create their nests outside, primarily in moist wood and inside damaged wood structures.

Linepithema humile or Argentine Ants

Argentine ants are an invasive species originally native to Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and southern Brazil. They can now be found everywhere. Their color varies from light to dark brown. Argentine ants do not have the ability to sting, however, when stepped on, workers emit a musty smell.

Camponotus or Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are comparatively large ants found in many forested parts of the world. They will create nests inside wood consisting of galleries chewed out with their mandibles, preferably in dead, damp wood. However, unlike termites, they do not consume the wood. But sometimes, they hollow out sections of trees. Many times they are also mistaken as termites. Few species of Carpenter ants are aggressive and will sting if their nest is disturbed.

Formica or Field Ants

Formica is a genus of ants of the family Formicidae. Field ants are also known as wood ants, mound ants and thatching ants. Formica is the type genus of the Formicidae, and of the subfamily Formicinae. They come in many colors including black, brown, yellow-brown and mixed red. Field ants can sting and while doing so they spray formic acid, which can induce a small degree of pain.

Brachyponera chinensis or Asian Needle Ants

Brachyponera chinensis, or the Asian needle ant, is a ponerine ant native to areas of Japan and Asia. The species can also be found in the United States and Canada. They areadventive and invasive type of species. They are brown-black with dark orange mandibles. Asian Needle Ants will mostly nests outdoors in shaded areas with high moisture. The sting of these abts are painful and sometimes causes a welt. A few number of cases where humans were stung resulted in anaphylactic shock.
