Difference Between Rats And Mice

Most of us are unable to distinguish between rats and mice. They actually look alike to the casual eye. Rats and mice are rodents and there are many species of both. There are certain features through which one can know to identify which pest is invading home or office premises.

Rat are medium-sized rodents with long and thin tails. There are many species of rodent that are called rats. Here are few: Norway rats, black rats, kangaroo rats, cotton rats, African pouched rats, naked mole rats, wood rats, pack rats and many others.

Mice are tiny, sparrow-sized rodents with long thin tails. Like rats, mice too have many species including house mice, field mice, deer mice, smoky mice, spiny mice, and dormice.

Rats

Though rats are medium in size, they may grow to be as long as 15 inches or more. They weigh more than mice. Another significant feature of rats are that they have more blunt snout as compared to that of mouse. They have long tails that are commonly hairless and scaly. Rats have white, gray, brown or black coats and are generally soiled enough to leave grease marks on surfaces they touch.

Mice

Mice have large, floppy ears and their snouts are triangular in shape and feature long whiskers. They measure between 4 to 8 inches in length (including the tail). Mice weighs between 12 to 30 grams. They have long, thin, hairy tails. Mice are white, brown or grey in color.

Due to their bigger body size, rat feces are larger than mouse feces. Also, rats are generally more aggressive and bolder than mice, so where a mouse will always run when it encounters humans, rats may be less quick to flee and, if cornered, may put up a fight. Mice are afraid of rats because rats may kill and eat mice. Rat odor can be a strong deterrent to mice and affect their behavior.
