Pests That Bite

Apart from outdoors, there are so many pests/insects that may bite or sting! Bees, ants, fleas, flies, mosquitoes, wasps, and arachnids are few of them. Fleas, ticks and bed bugs are few more (mostly inside your home) pests who bite humans.

Mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and bed bugs bite humans to get their next blood meal. Generally, insects or pests bites will only cause itchy welts on the skin, others may pose more serious health threats. Here in this article, we will discuss everything you should know about common biting pests.

Flea bites

If you find itchy, red bumps surrounded by a red halo, then you may have biten by fleas. Usually, flea bites are located in clusters on the lower legs and feet. Most fleas are dark reddish-brown in color and may size from 1/12 to 1/6 inch long. The bites result in painful and itchy red bumps. The saliva of fleas can cause serious allergy dermatitis in pets. Fleas not only serve as intermediate hosts for tapeworms, they can also spread diseases like rare bubonic plague to the bacterial disease murine typhus.

Bed bug bites

Bed bug bites generally appear in a line or grouped together, mostly on areas of the body that are not covered by cloth like the hands, neck, or feet. The itchy rash is due to an allergic reaction to the bite of a bed bug. These small rashes have red, swollen areas and dark-red centers. Bed bugs don’t transmit diseases, but their bite marks on the skin can turn into red, itchy welts. Some people may develop an allergic reaction to the bed bug’s saliva, which acts as a numbing agent.

Tick bite

The tick mostly remains attached to the skin for a long time and their bites can cause pain or swelling at the bite area. The tick bite may cause a rash, burning sensation, blisters, or even difficulty breathing. The tick bites will rarely appear in groups. Tics are are also vectors Lyme disease, babesiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis and a variety of other tick-borne diseases.

Mosquitoes bite

Like fleas and ticks, mosquitoes are most active during the warmer months. They require water to breed, therefore they are often found near water source of all sizes – from ponds and marshes to the bird bathes in our own backyards. When mosquitoes bite they leave red, itchy bumps on the skin. Mosquitoes are also vectors of serious and potentially fatal diseases like encephalitis, dengue fever and also spread yellow fever, malaria and Chikungunya virus. Interestingly Only female mosquitoes bite and feed on humans.
