Pests On The Rise In Toronto

According to a research done by the University of Toronto, many types of pests are not onlyliving in Toronto but are actually thriving. Certainly a bad news for Toronto's residents. Unwanted pests are now a common problem for many in the Greater Toronto Area. One of the objective of this study was to find that how humans, through building cities, have forced pests to evolve into a super-adjusted version of their species, with harmful results. The research revealed examples to show that evolution in organisms appears to have an influence on how human health is evolving.

The review of the study which was published in the journal “Science,” showed evidence that 134 species in the world have had their evolution affected by the actions of humans. Marc Johnson, Jason-Munshi-South, associate professor of biological sciences at Fordham University, examined almost 200 different studies.

The research found that pests like cockroaches, rats, mosquitoes, and bed bugs have all made adaptations. Old bed bug treatments no longer work and bed bugs have become resistant to older pyrethroid insecticides. This has allowed bed bugs populations to increase dramatically over the last few decades. Similarly, rats have been shown to adapt to the poison warfarin, which is often used to control an infestation. There population too have increased and controlling them has also become difficult.

The most common pests that invade residents of Toronto are cockroaches, bed bugs, rodents, ants and raccoons. If you are experiencing problems with pests in your home or office, contact Essen Pest Control today at 416 817 7378., and find out how we can help.
